The cruise terminal in Panama will receive the arrival of a new visitor, the Ocean Dream, of the Spanish chain Pullmantur. On 15 October, a new tourism proposal will open its doors to the world through the home port in Panama’s Colon Province. The Ocean Dream Cruise from Pullmantur the Spanish chain is the second ship sailing from Colon 2000 home port in Panama, kicking off the third season of cruises from this port, which will run from October through June 2011 reaching the West Indies and the South of the Caribbean.
Alfredo Singh, business manager for this line, said the ship will sail from Colon every Friday starting October 15 for eight months, which represents an opportunity for foreign tourists to stay longer in Panama. “This is an excellent opportunity not only for local tourists, but for the foreigner, to board a cruise in Colon, Panama,” said Singh.
Jannel Lazarus the regional administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority, explained that this would be the second cruise that set sail for the Colon home port, which has forced the training in tourism of the locals, in order to show the best side in the province.
So far, Lazarus said, with the support of the Authority for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (AMPYME) they have trained 35 people in order to build their own businesses in the tourism sector. O strengthen existing small businesses.
“We are preparing entrepreneurs to support the development of the industry without limits,” said the official.
The Ocean Dream is a cruise ship with a capacity of 1,422 passengers and 526 crew members which will become the second cruise in making departures from the city of Colon in October. On December 7, 2008, Royal Caribbean International, with its cruise Enchantment of the Seas, made the first voyage from the Colon 2000 home port, since then revenues have exceeded $75 million.
It is projected that more than 80 thousand tourists, mostly foreigners, depart from the terminal of Colon, representing an increase of 30 thousand passengers compared to the last two seasons. If the expectations are meet, port administrators hope to double the income.
The Pullmantur Ocean Dream cruise tourism destination is: sail from Colon to Cartagena de Indias, Santa Marta, Aruba, La Guaira in Venezuela, Curacao and back to Colon.
Since it opened its doors, the home port has made more than 21 departures and boarded just over 50 000 passengers, of whom about 14,000 were Panamanians and the other countries like Colombian, Mexican, Costa Rican and Venezuelan.
